For the last 4 years we have celebrated Christmas by having a party with the children at Hosanna Children’s Home. We take special treats (sausages, soda, and chips) and give each students a new pair of school shoes for the coming year. Unfortunately, this year our schedule’s didn’t line up, so we delayed the party until January.
Beatrice, or Mama as all of the children call her, had the idea to start a snack shop as a way to generate income for the orphanage. They have built a room that is a part of the outside gate that holds a potato cleaner, potato chopper, and a few deep-friers. They plan to have chips (french fries), fresh peanuts, mandazis (a type of baked cake/doughnut) and other snacks that will be available to sell to community members as they pass on the outside road. To help get the business off the ground we decided to purchase our chips for the party from their store, as opposed to buying from someone else. Unfortunately, there were a few mishaps with the electricity and power that needed to be sorted, but that is expected with any start-up business. Sadly, by the time everything was up and running our time was up and we had to leave before having the party. On the bright side, we had several hours of time iteracting with the children while we waited for the chips. We decided to leave all of the food and shoes so that they could celebrate later that evening. We received word from Isaac the next day that the kids had an amazing time and were very excited about their new shoes. This year we were even able to give extra funds to Isaac and Beatrice so that they could shoes for the outreach kids—kids from the community that come to Hosanna during the day for school, church, and food.
We are not responsible for much of the project we are able to do here. It is possible because of the generosity of others. We are very thankful to Kingsway PH Church for raising the money to by the shoes this year! Asante Sana!
We are also excited about the next project at Hosanna that we will share an update on soon. Hosanna is installing a biogas system and a new playground with basketball court thanks to the Rosslyn Academy Christmas Project as well as a generous donation from Dwayne and Connie Dunning (for the playground).
