This past week Rosslyn Academy had Spring Break, so we decided to take a little getaway as a family. We decided that this would be a great opportunity to take Sophie on her first hike, so we set out into the Rift Valley to hike Mt. Longonot. Mt. Longonot is a dormant volcano that we have hiked a couple of times in the past, but have not hiked it in a while. So we thought it would be a great day hike for Sophie. We quickly found out that Sophie is an amazing hiker…or at least an amazing rider. Our friends Phil and Kirsten allowed us to use their baby backpack carrier so that Sophie could “hike” in style. She loved to be on the trail and babbled and cooed all the way to the top. So at peace with the beautiful surroundings she even found time for a one hour nap. Daddy couldn’t have been happier being able to do something he loves with his two favorite girls. We are confident there are many more hikes in Sophie’s future. From Mt. Longonot we continued northward to Lake Elementita. Just for a night away we stayed at Sunbird Lodge, a tranquil and peaceful lodge overlooking the lake and surrounding mountains. For a quiet and relaxing getaway we couldn’t imagine a better location. It was a much needed night away as a family. For anyone looking for a nice, but quaint accommodation providing great views of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley we highly recommend Sunbird Lodge.
